Abdominal Massage

for supporting digestion, lymphatics, pelvic stagnation and muscle tension which can impact menstruation and defecation

Sequence

Lay on your back in a comfortable position

Locate your “hip bones” (ASIS - anterior superior iliac spine) and rib cage on each side of your abdomen for landmarks to follow

Apply oil

Criss cross - Glide hands criss crossing across abdomen from sides inward and back

Clockwise circles - keep both hands in constant contact with your skin as you massage slow deep clockwise circles between the pelvis and ribcage area

Kneading - Holding one or both hands over your naval area push and pull in a side to side kneading motion

Grounding breathing - following breath with your hands on the center of your abdomen, relaxing and breathing into the abdomen allowing your breath to fill and rise and exhaling fully allowing your abdomen to drop; do this for a few breaths

Transition your breath - with your next inhale suck your abdomen in to contract your transversus abdominis muscle. follow this motion with a few breathes inhaling with contraction of transversus abdominis, relaxing on the exhale; do this for a few breaths

Clockwise circles - keep both hands in constant contact with your skin as you massage slow deep clockwise circles between the pelvis and ribcage area

Point work - Follow breath pressing in with compressions using fingertips along meridian lines, first under ribs, press up and under rib cage, following ribcage center to sides; then from the ribs downward to the ilium (pelvis)

  • Under ribs, sides of abdomen, center of abdomen
  • Abdominal Meridian lines: liver, spleen, stomach, kidney, conception vessel, gallbladder
  • Meridian lines are TCM energy pathways through the body correlating with organ systems

Clockwise circles - keep both hands in constant contact with your skin as you massage slow deep clockwise circles between the pelvis and ribcage area

Gentle paddle motions clockwise - pressing hands palm to fingertips inward towards the navel/center in pie like sections beginning at ileocecal valve and ending at sigmoid colon in a clockwise direction

Clockwise circles - keep both hands in constant contact with your skin as you massage slow deep clockwise circles between the pelvis and ribcage area

Kneading - Holding one or both hands over your naval area push and pull in a side to side kneading motion

*Large intestine - Begin at sigmoid colon - using your fingers like a paddle in small clockwise circles, massage to warm up the area and break up any impacted stool by working counterclockwise along the large intestine pathway from the sigmoid colon up the descending colon; if highly impacted you may follow the full path completing the large intestine circle a few times beginning at the sigmoid colon and ending at the ileocecal valve.

Then again in a clockwise direction using these same motions, but beginning at the ileocecal valve and ending at the sigmoid colon to encourage proper peristaltic flow and complete elimination

This can be done without oil on the toilet if constipated

The counterclockwise step may be skipped if the bowels are NOT impacted as it can slow elimination if not constipated

Clockwise is always applicable, where counterclockwise is only helpful if the bowels are impacted

Clockwise circles - keep both hands in constant contact with your skin as you massage slow deep clockwise circles between the pelvis and ribcage area

Kneading - Holding one or both hands over your naval area push and pull in a side to side kneading motion

Press and vibrate - stack hands in the center of your abdomen over your navel, gentle apply pressure and vibrate hands

Rest hands on abdomen, ground and center breath to for completion
